Maturity of information, ICT, increase in costs and reduction of resources made one thing very clear: there is an ongoing global transformation process in the sector of mobility. Mobility is going in the direction of reducing inefficient costs, thinking alternative ways to travel, and cities are rapidly reinventing an eco-friendly, smart and green mobility.
As a new urban mobility study by the university Duisburg-Essen shows, metropolis are still producing 80% of the world’s greenhouse gases. And yet, the concept of urban mobility has not been changing much in the last 25 years. But, there are many realities that are doing their part in urban mobility and feeling a responsibility towards citizens.

Which realities should we keep an eye on?

These realities are some of the most interesting, innovative and fast-growing in Green Mobility:

Lilium

Lilium is a German company that is building the world’s first electric vertical take-off and landing jet, which hopefully will become an “air-taxi” service in the future. The idea is a jet that will reduce travel times, traffic, noise, emissions. It will need no new infrastructure, just a landing pads that can be developed by anyone. The costs? Do not panic, Lilium jets will be as affordable as riding a car. But, there will be some more waiting for all this to happen: in 2019, there will be the first fully functional jet taking off, and in 2025 on-demand air transport will be a reality. But 2017 was not bad either, considering the 90$ million raised that will enable their growth. We are looking forward to witnessing this future happen!

Volocopter

The dream of flight is as old as humanity itself, and this is why Volocopter is reinventing the future: to have a part in it. The Volocopter is the first ever fully electric and manned multicopter with a permit to fly. This means no combustion engine, no fuel and no emissions as a result. It was born in 2011, when the idea was proven to be working, and by the end of 2017 there will be World Premiere in Dubai City, as the first ever autonomous air taxi test run in the history of aviation.
This vehicle fulfills German and international safety standards, and it is autonomous, time saving, safe, quiet, environmentally friendly, and efficient. And, moreover, it opens up a completely new perspective on our cities as prime living spaces.

Unumotors

Unumotors is a startup that builds smart electric scooters, that enables you to spare the city from fumes and noise pollution. They sell scooters online, and deliver them right in front of your door. What else? You need to recharge it just every 3 days. In the long run, buying an unu scooter is the most eco-friendly (with zero emission and less than 0,70 Euro per 100 kilometres) and reasonable investment you can do if you live in a big city. With such an electric device, you’re becoming part of the change that will affect the future. Even Gründerszene, the German magazine about startups, ranked it as the 4th fastest growing startup in Germany, thanks to its growth rate of 725%.

German Autolabs

German Autolabs is a Berlin-based startup, made of automotive experts, developing IoT solutions. They are working on the world´s first digital co-driver (named Chris) in order to make the driving experience pleasant, safe and nice. What will Chris be able to do?  It will be like driving with a friend, who assists you while driving. You just need to connect your digital co-driver it to your smartphone, and conveniently it will operate your most favorite apps, like messaging, emails, calls or music.
The concept of car and mobility itself is evolving, and German Autolabs is not standing and watching this change: they are acting upon it, and evolving at the speed of light.

Door2door

Door2door is a mobility startup funded in 2012 in Germany, which enables city and public transport companies to run their own mobility services with their integrated mobility platform. This company is dreaming of a free-car city, which goes beyond inefficient and old-fashioned transportation systems, and that implements flexible solutions. They want to change the future of cities, and connect citizens’ demands, by providing them a comprehensive user-centric transport planning app. On September 29, 2017, not even a month ago, Duisburg became the first city to introduce door2door public transports.

Emmy

Emmy is a company born in 2014 that offers electric scooter sharing. They believe in a future where private cars are not needed anymore, where cities are free of traffic and emissions. They want to build cities where people actually feel comfortable in. Which is the company mission? First of all, making “emmys”(their electric scooters) available anywhere and at any time, and, secondly, fun. There are currently more than 20,000 people using 350 emmys on the roads of 5 major Germany cities. They are growing, and they are doing it quickly, because they know this is the only way to prevail over their competitors.

All these companies have a dream in common: they want to change the way people conceive transportation in the modern era. Piece of cake, right?
As the world becomes more urban, an increasing number of people is living in urban areas, and it’s becoming more essential to fight carbon emissions, air pollution and traffic jams. Social challenges need to be tackled with new perspectives, and, in this case, startups and companies need to help modern cities to solve the urban mobility issue. Cities and companies have a special responsibility, and it is their job to come up with innovative, green solutions that will make urban transportation and individual mobility more user-friendly, more efficient, and, above all, more sustainable.
